MUSIC of the HARVEST
Andy Hackbarth Band, Dumptruck Butterlips, & Dan Costello
Saturday, October 13th, 2012 @ 7:00PM
Fall is in full swing and farmers are bringing in their crops. The crisp chill in the air forces many to seek the comforts of the indoors in search of things to entertain their eyes and ears. MUSIC of the HARVEST features nationally touring artists Andy Hackbarth Band and Dumptruck Butterlips with local guest Dan Costello performing live at the Visual Arts Collective.
The music of award-winning singer/songwriter Andy Hackbarth injects the technique and energy of classical and Spanish guitar into folk/indie pop songs, which combine musical innovation with the accessibility of pop music. Several of Andy’s original songs have seen substantial radio play, and in addition to headlining his own national tours, Andy has also recently shared the stage with Melissa Etheridge, Los Lobos, John Oates, Keb Mo, Mat Kearney among others. Andy’s band is comprised of Mike Hyland (Lead Guitar), Megan Tipton (Viola), Jean-Luc Davis (Bass), Andrew Hoyle (Drums), and Luke Lindholm (Violin). The group is currently recording their fourth album and en route on a two-month national tour.
Dumptruck Butterlips (DTBL), from Lawrence, Kansas blends a number of genres ranging from soul, country, and folk playing traditional bluegrass instruments. DTBL has opened for a wide array of heavy-hitters in live music including Keller Williams, Railroad Earth, Beats Antique, and Split Lip Rayfield to name a few. Mustard (guitar, vocals), Ziggy (accordion, keyboard, vocals), Megan (upright bass, vocals) and Surka (washboard, xylophone, vocals) all securely execute their performances and draw the audience in towards the great time they are having on stage. In addition to their easy-going stage presence, they are visually stunning. The blend of music, custom-made outfits, and undeniably impressive hula-hooping skills of Surka and Ziggy make them a specifically incredible live band. The artists manage to find a niche in their live performances no matter what the crowd, venue, or other artists. DTBL’s ability to captivate anyone within an earshot is a testament to their musicianship and repertoire of original music. A number of the songs dwell on drinking, gritty passion in the bedroom, and the everyday shenanigans of being a “gypsy hippie.” Their sound effortlessly changes from bright, funky acoustic to unhurried, deep soul. The talented group has a fast-growing, well-deserved audience, and are easy to fall for.
Blending classical, bluegrass, progressive rock, jazz, and folk may be difficult, even hazardous, but singer-songwriter and guitarist Dan Costello is up to the challenge. His performance experience ranges from hard rock bands to jazz ensembles to medieval instrumental troupes. He earned a Bachelors of Music degree in classical guitar in 2001 and works both in and out of the scholastic realm as a performer, accompanist, editor, composer, arranger, lyricist, teacher, and most recently, radio show producer with Music From Stanley. Costello is an outspoken advocate of local grassroots music.
Experience the music of Andy Hackbarth, Dumptruck Butterlips, and local Dan Costello LIVE during MUSIC of the HARVEST on Saturday, October 13th at the Visual Arts Collective (VaC). The VaC caters to the eyes and ears of music lovers with a wide stage, plenty of room for sitting and dancing, an excellent sound system, and walls filled with works by local artists.
